For most of the last two years, the advice for QuickBooks Desktop users has been simple: Desktop 2024 is the last annual release, it will be discontinued on May 31, 2027, so plan your move before then. In August 2026, Intuit changed that plan.
According to Intuit's stated position as of August 2026, QuickBooks Desktop 2024, including Pro Plus, Premier Plus, and Enterprise Solutions 24.0, will not be discontinued in May 2027. Instead of the usual three-year lifecycle, it moves to continuous support, with security patches, tax updates, and other changes delivered as in-product updates rather than as a new yearly version. There is no announced end date.
That is good news for many businesses. It does not mean the question has gone away, and for some businesses, particularly ones being sold or handed down, the risks are much the same as before.
What Changed, and What Didn't
Here is where things stand:
- Desktop 2024 has no announced sunset. Intuit says it will keep supporting it, provided users accept the updates when prompted and keep their subscription current.
- Desktop 2023 and earlier are already discontinued. Those versions reached end of support on May 31, 2026. Discontinued versions lose access to add-on services such as payroll and online banking, live technical support, and security updates.
- New Pro Plus and Premier Plus subscriptions are still closed. Since September 30, 2024, Intuit has not sold new QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus or Premier Plus subscriptions to new US customers. Existing subscribers can renew.
- No more annual versions. Desktop 2024 was the last yearly release. Future changes arrive as updates to it.
Who Is Still Exposed
Anyone Still on 2023 or Older
If the company file still opens in QuickBooks Desktop 2023, 2022, or earlier, that software is already unsupported. Payroll and bank feeds connected through Intuit stop working on discontinued versions, and new security problems will not be fixed. The fix is to get onto a supported version or move platforms, and the sooner the better.
Anyone Whose Subscription Lapses
Continuous support only helps an active subscriber who keeps updating. A business that lets its Pro Plus or Premier Plus subscription lapse may not be able to buy one again, because new subscriptions for those editions are not being sold to new US customers. The practical options then are Enterprise, which costs considerably more, or moving to QuickBooks Online or another platform.
Anyone Relying on "No End Date" as a Plan
An announced policy is not a contract. Intuit changed the Desktop plan once in August 2026 and could change it again. Pricing, included features, and what runs on the Desktop platform can all shift with a product announcement. A business can reasonably stay on Desktop 2024 today, but it should not assume it can stay there indefinitely without reviewing the situation.
Why This Matters Most When a Business Changes Hands
The businesses most likely to get caught out are the ones going through a sale, a retirement, or a hand-off to the next generation. That is because a Pro Plus or Premier Plus subscription is tied to an account, and the account usually belongs to the seller.
Several things can go wrong in a transfer:
- The buyer may not be able to subscribe. If the buyer cannot take over the existing subscription, they may be a new US customer for an edition that is no longer sold to new customers. That forces a platform decision at the worst possible time, right after closing.
- Integrations break quietly. Payroll, merchant services, inventory tools, time tracking, and e-commerce connectors are often tied to the seller's Intuit login or to a third-party account in their name.
- Custom reports and memorized transactions live in the file. Some do not carry over cleanly to QuickBooks Online or other platforms, and the business has often leaned on them for years.
- The file lives on an old PC. Many Desktop company files sit on a single office computer or a shared drive, sometimes running Windows 10, which reached end of support on October 14, 2025. If that machine fails during the transition, the backup plan matters a great deal.

A Practical Inventory
Whether you plan to stay on Desktop, move to QuickBooks Online, or sell the business, take an hour and write down the following. Your CPA will want most of it anyway.
- The exact edition and version (open QuickBooks, press F2, and note the product name).
- Whose Intuit account the subscription is under, and its renewal date.
- Which computer or server holds the company file, and what operating system it runs.
- How and where the file is backed up, and when a restore was last tested.
- Every add-on and integration: payroll, payments, inventory, time tracking, e-commerce, banking.
- Custom reports, memorized reports, and any exports someone builds by hand each month.
- Who has a login and what level of access they have.
- How many years of history you need to keep available for tax and audit purposes.
So What Should You Do?
If you are on Desktop 2024 with an active subscription, you can likely stay put for now. Accept the updates, keep the subscription current, and keep the inventory above up to date. Review the decision once a year, or immediately if Intuit announces another change.
If you are on 2023 or older, you are already on unsupported software. Get onto a supported version or move platforms now.
If the business is about to change hands, settle the accounting platform question before closing, not after. Confirm whether the subscription and every integration can transfer, and if they cannot, plan the move as part of the deal.
